Fashion Revolution: Why We Should Consume Consciously

Last week you may have noticed a rather peculiar trend on social media: people wearing their clothes inside out. Although it might have looked like a way for consumers to brag about how much disposable income they have to splash out on designer brands, the message was much deeper. Participants were making a statement about the need for transparency in the fashion industry.

This was all part of Fashion Revolution Week, which saw the social media movement #WhoMadeMyClothes. Fashion Revolution was founded in the UK following the 2013 Rana Plaza factory fire in Bangladesh, in which over 1,000 people were killed. There were five garment factories in Rana Plaza, all of which manufactured clothing for big global brands.

Most of the 1,000+ victims were young women. The tragedy highlighted the huge disparity between brands and those who manufacture the clothes, and has since encouraged both brands and consumers to buy consciously.

Have you ever considered who made your clothes? What their living and working conditions are like?

Sadly, the majority of people who make clothes for the global market live in poverty. Many are subject to verbal and physical abuse, work in unsafe and unhygienic conditions, and are paid very little.

Fashion Revolution celebrates a love of clothes, but not at the cost of people’s lives or our planet.

At Let’s Buy British, we are very transparent about our passion for supporting British-made goods, and this definitely extends to fashion.

Here's a round-up of some of our top picks of beautiful, British-made clothing.
